Floods at Nelson. Nelson, Jan 26. _ Some damage was done to cut grain on Saturday night, many of the streams being flooded by heavy rain, and some stocks were washed away from the low lying lands. Cottage Burnt Down. A cottage, occupied by Mrs Bairy, was destroyed by fire this evening. There was no insurance on the contents, but the building was covered to the extent of £l5O in the Sun. It was owned by Mr Parmentor. Hutt County Engineer, Wellington, Jan 26. A. W. Newton ot Maryborough, Queensland, has been appointed engineer and inspector to the Hutt County Council. Salmon. The Marino Department U sending to London for identification the supposed salmon recently caught at Motueka. St. Patrick's Scholarships. HPour scholarships offered by the St. Patrick's College for public competition were won by B. Kelly, E. Casey, and D. Madden, all of Wellington, and P. Ivavanagh, Masterton. Harvest Prospects. Palmerston North, Jan. 26. An informal conference of the North Is'and llourmillers was held at Palmerston North to-day. It is expected that, if the anticipated good harvest is satisfactorily grained, there will be a further drop in the price of flour. Settlement of the Land. Wanganui, January 26. An important meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, attended by representative business men, settlers and Maori chiefs, was held to-night and passed a resolution strongly urging the Government to proceed with the reading of the interior, but particularly in the construction of the Parapara road between Raetihi and Wanganui so as to permit of the speedy settlement of the large Ohutu of 250,000 acres.
