PRESENTATION TO SERGEANTMAJOR M'DONALD.

Yesterday evening (says the W. C. Times) Sergeant-Major M'Donald, who is retiring from the Police Force after thirty-three and a-half years' service, was invited to attend at the station where ho was presented wi h a very handsome silver-mounted pipe, suitably inscribed, and a silver-mounted pocket flask. The presentation was madp on behalf of the men by Sergeant Folley, who has recent'y taken charge in this district. Sergeant Folley in a neat speech eulogised the many good qualities of the Sergeant Major, with whom he had been associated for years. In reply the Sergeant-Major said he was taken by surprise, and thanked Sergeant Folley for the kind and flattering manner in which be had spoken of him, and also thanked the men for their hand-ome presents. He said that during his long service he had performed his duties, which were not always agreeable, to tbs best of his ability, and in doing so he had always endeavored to avoid friction with the public, and with the men with wlrra be served. He would show the mementos to his friends with pride, and long retain kind memoriet of the donors. He had no doubt that the staff would get on well under Sergeant Folley of whom he could speak in the highest terms He expressed regret at severing his connection with a service in which he had spent the best part of his life, but he must bow to the inevitable. He was glad to tell them he was id good hea'th, and still not to be despised in action. Constables Bennett and Cassin said that Sergeant Folley bad fully expressed' the sentiments of the members of the f rce in this district, and there was not much for them to say.
