[per press association.] Wellington Races.—First Day. Wellington, January 22. The opening day of the Wellington Bacing Club's summer meeting was a great success. There was glorious weather and. a record attendance. About 7000, including visitors from all p irts of the colony, were present. Speculation was brisk, £13,937 going through the machine against £9043 for the corresponding day of 1902, and this despite the large number of bookmakers, who appeared to drive a g3od busness. The results were : Anniversary Handicap -Wmdwbls le 1, L/vonia 2, Memira 3. Livonia with Shrapnel Shell led until entering the straight, when Windwhisile cameand won half a length, Memira with luto run gaining third honors. Time 1 42 1-5. Div £5 12* 61 arjd£G 3<. Eaupehu Hick H .a.!..a;j—Narcotic 1, Good Intent 2, Wakanae 3. Lavalette, Ciovelly, Opaeio find Apprentice were scratched. A good race. Won by a long neck. Time 116 2-5. Div £9 1p and £1 16i. WBLLINOT N COP. Advance 1 Hinetauia 2 CannieOhiel 3 All start d. Motor and Dundas were in front for tho best part of a mile, but on nearing the straigh l , Advance who had been racing in the rear went to the frontand won by two lengths without an offort. Cannie Chiel three lengths away. The winner rece'vfd an ovation. The time was 234 1-5, which constitutes a record for the colony. Divs £2 9s amd £2 7s. Electric Handicap—Petrovna 1, Turepo 2, Hohoro 3. Scratched—Ostiak, WWgtiard and Bed Gauntlet. A gcod jjaee. Won by a quarter of a length. |ime 1 1; divs, £6 8s Cd and £3 lis." Tongariro Hack Handicap—'Good Intent 1, Cumulus 2, Wehenga 3. Scratched —Shackle, Briliiantiue, Dedona and Wind. Time, 1 42 2-5 ; divs, £6 4s 6d and £3 14s. Nursery Handicap-Gladsome 1, Treadmill 2, Aurutus 8. King Log was scratched. It was a fine race. Won by a neck. Time, 1 8 ; divs, £9 19s and 10s. Telegraph Handicap —Petrovna 1, Red Gauntlet 2, Ayrdale 3. Scratched— West Guard, Pallas and Kinglet. Petrovna and Bed Gauntlet fought out the finish, the former winning by two lengths. Time, 114 2-5 ; divs, £7 8s 6d and £1 7s 6d.
Foxton Races.—First Day. Palmerston North, Jan 22. There was fine weather, good fields and excollent races on the first day of the Foxton Racing Club's meeting. £7,500 was put through the totalisator against £5433 the same day last year. The results are: Flying Hack Handicap—Ballarat 1, Prisoner 2, Handsome Rose 3. Time, 1 16; divs, £5 18s and 17s. Maiden Hack Hurdles —Midia 1, Ranui 2, Pakiaka 3. Time, 3 55 ; divs, £2 5s £lls.
