Westport Y/aterworka. WESTroRT, Jan. 22. The West port waterworks, which have cess about £20,009, were officially opened to-day. Miss Scanlon, sister of tho Mayor, turned on tho wat.-r. la the course of hi* speech, the Mayor congratulated Mr Schadich, engineer of tho works, on the success of his efforts, and added that he intended to invito the local agent 3 of tho Fire Insurance companies to a public trial of the fire extinguishing appliances, and hoped that it would result in the reduction of insurance rates by one-haif.
The Price of Flour. Dunedin, Jan 22. Tho Daily Times states that a flutter was caus.-d' in milling circles by on ultiinatum from the headquarters of the Flour Milling Association that a reduction of £l per ton in the price of fllour (from £lB to £l2) had been made to check importations. At a hastily convened meeting of the Duncdia millers they declined to accept the reduction, contending that at tbe price of wheat it was impossible to sell at £l2. Inquest. At th 9 inquest touching the death of Annie Wrigley Coulter, stewardess on tho steamer Victoria, who fell over the wharf and was drowned while going aboard, the verdict returned was accidental deith by drowning, no blame being atachable to anyone. The jury added a rider calling the attention of the authorities to the necessity for tho wharves being better lighted, and that chains or capes should be provided to prevent similar acciden's.
