(PER PSKSS ASSOCIATION.) Impersonation. Dunedin, Jan 21. At Palmerston to-day before Major Keddell, S.M., James Hogan, of Flag Swamp, was committed for trial on a charge under section 512 of the Blectorol Act of having on the 25th November applied for a voting paper in the name of Robert Hogan, junr. Accused, who was under the influence of liquor, entered the booth at Dunbaok, and when the name of Robert Hogan, junr,, of Hawkesbury. farmer, was read out said “That’s me,” whereupon he was handed voting papers. Dunedin Drainage Board. Not much interest was taken in the poll for tha election of throe members of the Drainage Board. Dr Coughtrey, J. A. Hanock and James Hazlett wore elected. Defence Matters. Wellington, Jan. 21. A deputation waited on the Premier again to-night to complain of a matter in which the Defence Force Kiflo Association’s programme for the annual shooting contest has been drawn up, and also of the quality of the weapons supplied. The deputation represented the rifle clubs of the district. It was pointed out that the members of the rifle clubs were debarred from competing in many events on the programme. Out of e pr'ze list of £992 the sum of £779 was reserved for volunteers. Mr Seddon, in reply, deprecated the belief that the Defence Department wished to discourage rifle clubs. On the contrary, they decided to give them every reasonable encouragement. At the same time the Government regard the volunteer movemrnt as of paramount importance. The sole reason for tho Government taking over the Rifle Association meetings was to encourage volunteering. He promised to consides certain details of the programme for the forthcoming meeting. Queen’s Scholarships. The following are the winners of the Queen's scholarships at Yic oria College : A Sandel (Napier), 1,674 marks; James Russel (Ormond ville), 1„587 ; Eric Lyon (Wellington), 1,559, N. Pobelberg (Mount Cook, Wellington), 1636, HeLn Hunt (Mount Cook, Wellington) 1489, Alfred Pjddick (Mount Cook, Wellington) 1477. Public Health Hatters Steatfoed, Jau 21. The district health officer, to-day interviewed the county council in endeavoring to arrange with the council to join the other Taranaki local bodies and appoint a sanitary inspector for the district. The council dec’ined to contribute the quota cf £57 per annum. All the other bod es favored tho proposal. Milling Accidents. Waihi, Jan 21. To-day on employee at the Waihi Gold Mining Company’s battery had three fingers severed from one hand. Five minutes later a companion engaged in similar work met with a precisely similar accident. _____________
