LORD HAWKE’S CRICKET TEAM

(per press association.) Wellington, Jan. 17. Though rain fell in the night it did not materially injure the wicket, except at one end, where it crumbled a little. After the Englishmen were disposed of for 289, Wellington were expected after their batting on Thursday, to make a draw of it. They began fairly well, with 4 wickets down for 81, but after lunch Thompson found a spot, and whenever he hit it seemed to take a wicket. Mahoney played a capital innings, but could get no one to stay with him, all were out for 140, leaving the Englishmen 95 to get to win with hours to go, These runs were hit off by Warner and Burnup. Iu the first over, however, the latter should have been caught with his total at 17, but was badly missed, and though Warner gave a possible chance, which was lost by Mahoney slipping, nothing else could be urged against them. Burnup played a masterful innings and did some hard clean lifting, two of his drives landing over the ropes for 6 each. In England’s first innings Thompson carried his bat out for 48, which with his bowling to-day was well up to bis reputation of a sound all-round player. In the second innings, Warner was not out for 43, Burnup (not out) 50, extras 4, making 97, or two more than 'required. For Wellington Mahoney was top score with 40 (not out), Gore 23, Hickson 26, Richardson 19. The best bowling was done by Upham—4 for 57. Against Wellington Thompson took 7 for 57, Hargreave 1 for 46, and Bbsanquet 1 for 23. The weather was fine and there was another large gate, the total attendance being a record. The takings amounted to some £650, which it is expected will give a profit of over £3OO to the local Association.
