COBDEN SCHOOL PICNIC.

Cobden was en fete yosterday, the attraction being the State School picnic. Headed by the Salvation Army band, at ten o'clock sharp, the children assembled at Cobden bridge under tho control of the head teacher, Mr Bromley, and marched to a paddock at the rear end of the main road, where a pleasant time was spent in recreation of various descriptions. In front of all was a tastefully decorated banner, with the words "'Cobden S ate School" neatly worked in the centre, accompanied on each side by the New Zeala.id Ensign, and a stream of coloured flags coming on behind added still more to the living scene, ]

On arrival on the ground it was noticeable that not only had the catering been attended to in detail, but that awnings and seats had been provided to accommodate the older folk and protect them from the scorching sun, which were greatly appreciated. Master Ernest Stewart, Joseph Skeats, and Mrs John Musson, won the two medals and pencil case presented by Messrs Milner, Lloyd, and Gilbert Bros, respectively.

At nightfall the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" concluded a most successful picnic, everyone going home apparently satisfied with the day's outing. The Committee and teachers are to be complimented on the success of the undertaking, which is an indication of what can be obtained by hearty co-opera-tion, and it is to be hoped it is but the forerunner of a series of picnics, as such gatherings bring us more into social touch with one another, and tend to break the monotony of school life to both teachers and pupils alike.
