Movements of the Governor. Wmmngton, Dec 27. Lord and Lady Eanfurly accompanied by their family left early this morning by the Tutanekai on a trip to the southern lighthouses. The Tutanekai is timed to reach the Bluff by January 25th. Embezzlement. Napieb, Dec 27.
Norman George Cox, senior clerk at the Hastings Post Office pleaded guilty to-day and was committed for trial for embezzling two sums of £95 and £34 9s 5d The first amount was money paid into the Post Office Savings Bank and the second amount land tax. Bail was allowed. Death of an Old Pioneer.
New Plymouth, Dec 27.
Of late the deaths of old settlers here has been very continuous. To-day another passed away, Dearius Shuttleworth aged 70. For many years he was a member of the firm of Shuttleworth Brother?. Deceased was a director of the Gas Co. and Taranaki Building Society. He was for many years a very prominent churchman and greatly respected and esteemed. He came here in 1856 and after the war, helped to build up a largo and successful business.
Record Rifle Shooting. Local records were beaten at the rifle range to-day, by Col-Sergeant Okey who made 32 at 500 ; 35 at 600 ; 32 at 700 ; 30 at 800 at a six foot six target, thus making 131 out of a possible 140. Death from an Accident.
DuNKaiN, Dec 27.
William Taylor, a boy brought from Waikonaiti with a broken thigh and who was suffering from concussion of the brain died in the institution. Premier's Yiews supported at the Front. Wellington, Dec 27. Colonel Porter has cabled the Premier from Dundee:—"Yours re combination of the Eighth Contingent as one unit is wise and just. Composite mounted troops on column are unsatisfactory in field and camp. New Zealanders admittedly do excellently.
Changes in Survey Department. Wellisfton, Dec 57.
Consequent on Merchant's promotion to be Chief Surveyor, tha following changes will take place in the Lands and Survey Department:—J. Straohan, Commissioner in Taranaki, becomes Commissioner of Wellington district, James M'Kenzie, Chief Draughtsman, Wellington, succeeds Straohan as Commissioner at Taranski; W. Kensington, Chief Draughtsmon, Auckland, becomes Under Seoretary for Lands and Survey; L. Cussen, District Surveyor, Auckland, takes the Chief Draughtsmanship at Auckland L. Humphries, Chief Surveyor, Nelson, becomes Chief Surveyor of Canterbury; W. G. Murray, Chief Surveyor, Westland, is appointed to succeed Humphries at Nelson; G. Roberts, Chief Draughtsman, Hokitika, takes W. G. Murray's place; L. Smith, Inspecting Surveyor, succeeds M'Kenzie as Chief Draughtsman at Wellington ; Millar, of Aucklind, is appointed Assistant Surveyor-General.
