THE EIGHTH CONTINGENT.

Wellington, Dec 28.
It is understood that Col Davis has accepted the command of the Eight Contingent. At a conference with the Premier on Christmas eve, Davis and acting Commandant (Major Owen) were instructed with the seleotion of 44 officers required. As both are now away from Wellington, and are not likely to return till the beginning of the New Year, it is not likely that the announcement will be made for some days.
