Sequel to the Waimate Fire. Wellington, Deo 28. The steamer Waimate was seized here this morning tinder an order from the Vice-Admiralty Oourt at the instance of the owners of the steamer Aburiri, and the Napier fire brigade, for the satisfaction of a claim of a £IOOO for services rendered on the occasion when the vessel was lately on fire in the Napier roadstead. She was, however, soon released on local representatives of the New Zealand Shipping Co giving a bond for the amount pending the hearing of the case which will take place at Napier. Narrow Escape from Death. Auckland, This Day. Oxlade, a member of the Australian athletic team, had a sensational escape from a fall into "Hell's Gate" at Tikitere, Rotorua. He- was skylarking on the brink of the chasm when the soil gave way. Both his feet were disappearing when he was grabbed by Marks, and was saved from falling into the water which is 232 degrees, and a horrible death. Fatal Accidents. Auckland, This Day. At Morrinsville Hewitt, a sea-faring man, was thrown from his horse and had his neck broken. At Huntly, Doris, third daughter of Mrs Lucy Leek was drowned attempting to reach her sister who was in a boat. Supposed Incendiary Fire. Gaetebton, This Day. Stables valued at £3OO and owned by Mrs Tucker, were burned last night. Incendiarism is suspected, this being the fourth out-building mysteriously burned in as many months, it was insured for £125. Bemounts. The Masterton Stock Department has purchased 60 horses fov remounts.
