[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.] Dry weather and Yegatation. Beceived this day at 10 9 a. m. Sydney, Deo 28. The long spell of dry weather in the coastal districts has caused much damage to vegetables which are selling at high price. South African Troops. Becruits for the new Contingent are plentiful throughout the States. A number of returned soldiers have decided to commence an action against the Government to recover the balance of pay which they allege to be duo. The action hinges on the point as to whether they were to be paid 4/6 per day, exclusive of Imperial pay. The Government contends that 4/6d was meant to include the Imperial rate. A Tragedy. Melboubne, Deo 28. A mysterious drowning case has occurred at Port Melbourne. The bodies of a woman named Chamberlain and three children were found floating in the bay. The woman had reoontly arrived in the country, and was much depressed. The whereabouts of the eldest daughter aged thirteen is unknown, It is believed she was also drowned. State Lawyers. Hobaet, Deo. The Conference of State AttorneysGeneral meets on January 24th to discuss the disirability of permitting practitioners in one State to practise in all other States.
