Hawke’s Bay y. Wellington
Wellington, Dec 26.
There were about 1500 spectators at the cricket match Hawke’s Bay v. Wellington, and the weather and wicket were all that could be desired. Nevertheless the bowlers had the upper hand all day, and nearly three innings were completed. Wellington made a miserable exhibition, none of them except Richardson being able to play Trott’s elusive bowling. This specially appears to be a change of pace from fast to slow without any perceptible alteration in delivery. The mixture of the two was fatal to most of the batsmen, and in addition several threw their wickets away by cirelessness. Trott was not in form with the bat at the first attempt, but on going in again played crisp, clean hitting, which saved his side from another collapse. The scores were : Hawke’s Bay, 109 and 98 for 7 wickets —Cato 29 and 14, A. Gore 23 and 4, Dent 10, Marshall 9 and 11, Trott 1 and 23. Wellington 54—Richardson 13, C. Gore 11, Hales 12. For Hawke’s Bay Trott took 5 wickets for 17 and Dent 3 for 34.
For Wellington Hales secured 6 for
