THE EIGHTH CONTINGENT.

Wellington, Dec 24. There has oeen trouble over the lenders for supplies of the Eight Contingent. Same had been selected without Ministerial authority. These contracts have been cancelled and a time given for other tenders to come from Auckland, and Dundin. All tenders received will be con* eidered on their merits.

At a meeting of the Cabinet on Thursday four thousand applications were received for the thousand places in the contingent, two thousand for 44 commissions.

Colonel has the first refusal of command and is coming to Wellington to-morrow to consult the Premier.

Seddon will spend his Xmas Day making a selection of officers. Enough officers have volunteered who have seen service in former contingents to fill all the commisaons, but some may also be wanted for vacancies in the Sixth and Seventh.

The command of Trentham and Addington will be given to officers, who will ultimately go with the Contingent.

Tho tender of Birt and Co for the transport of the troops in the Surry and Cornwall has been accepted. Both vessels will carry 700 troops and both have refrigerating machinery,

The Surry which is now in Australian waters is timed to leave Wellington about the 22ad of January, and will call at Auckland for tho horses.

The Cornwall which is to take the Southern battalion is now on her way to Australia from tho Cape, and is to leave Lyttelton not later than the 31st of January,

Napier, This Day. The Hawkes Bay section of the eighth contingent was chosen this morning. Those selected include eight returned troopers, six members of mounted corps, five infantry and one civilian.
