OTAGO DREDGING NOTES.
(PBB PEBSS ASSOCIATION.) Ddnedin, This Day,
The Deep Steam Hydraulic Sluicing Company were unfortunate enough to have their head race carried away on Thursday evening as a result of a severe thunderstorm. The Deep Stream rose 7ft 6in in fifty minutes, and the rush of water down the blind gully was so overpowering that the masonry of the dam was carried away. The directors of the Royal Charlton Gold Dredging Company have convened an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders for the purpose of consider, ing a resolution that the company bo wound up voluntarily. This company, whose claim is adjacent to ths Lady Charlton and Central Charlton claims, have decided before incurring any obligations to wait until the above mentioned dredge had proved the worth of the ground. The results achieved by these companies so far, have not been too promising, and now that the Lady Charlton dredge has been forced to close down as a result of an injunction granted against that Co., the directors of the Royal Charlton probably consider that there is not sufficient inducement to put a dredge on to work the claim.
The Maoris in the Bay of Plenty have caught quite a number of whales this year. The fish taken up to now have been of the humpback variety, but the sperm whales which travel in schools of ten to twenty are expected shortly to make their appearance on their way south.
The Lady Cardona Coy in liquidation sold their dredge at a satisfactory figure, to a private syndicate who intended working her in the Waikaka Valley. The weather has been very fine for the last few days, and it is hoped will continued to last till over the holidays.
