COBDEN SCHOOL PRIZES.

The weather last night was anything but favorable; but, notwithstanding, a large number of parents and friends attended the Cobden School to see the prizes given out. The presentation was made by the Chairman (MrPoultcr), who intimated that, owing to the disorganised state of the school, the Committee deemed it advisable to award, in addition to prizes for order of merit at the recent examination, a present to every child attending the school. The following scholars gained distinction Standard I.—lvy Baty Ist, Grace Mason 2nd, Boy Leighton 3rd. Standard ll.—Melba Batty Ist, Ernest Stewart 2nd, Frederick Foord and Ethel Murfitt 3rd.

Standard lll,—Cyril Taylor Ist, Ethel Nelson 2nd, Eva Willis 3. Standard IY.—Alfred Baty Ist, Maicjlm M'Leod 2nd, Lucas Gillingham 3rd. Standard V.—David Hugh Ist, May Smith 2nd, Walter Hayes 3rd. Standard VI- George Buckett 1, Walton and Jessie Murray 2nd. SEWING PHIZES. Standard Yll—Daisy Clark Ist, and Annie Allison. Standard Yll—Daisy Clark Ist, Standard Vl—Jessie Boss Ist, Jessie Murray 2nd, Edith Gillingham 3rd. Standard V—Elsie Ross Ist, May Bustark 2nd, May Smith 3rd. Standard IV —Mary Ross 2st, Louisa Hornsby 2nd. Standard lll—Eva Willis Ist, Ethel Nelson 2nd, Ida Leighton 3rd. Standard 11—-Eva Martin Ist, Nellie Jacobs 2nd, Nellie Batty 3rd. Standard I—Gwendoline Smith 1, Ivy Baty 2nd, Annie Nelson 3rd. The Chairman then called upon either of the teachers to give a brief resume of the past year’s work ; but, owing to their absence, the audience could not bo satisfied in this respect. Mr Poultor also intimated that he had received a generous response from the people of the districts towards the picnic to be held on the 27th instant, and he thanked them most heartily; also, that he had received two silver medals from Messrs Milner and Lloyd for competition on that date.

In conclusion Mr Leighton, on behalf of the residents, thanked the Committee for the way they had striven for their educational interests, which was nothing more nor less the result of an infusion of new blood.

The Chairman, in responding, remarked that as a real live Committee they had done, and were doing, their duty.
