GREYMOUTH CONVENT CONCERT.
Children’s concerts always possess an interest and charm to a large number of adults. Nor is this to bo surprised at seeing that the little actors are their own, and that they are desirous of seeing how they acquit themselves, and from-their actions, and demeanour, and manner, and matter of speech, form some idea of the progress made daring the past twelve months, A concert very much under such conditions was given in the fine Convent School building last night to a large and appreciative audience, who wore not slow to signify their approval of the excellent tuition of the Sisters; who indeed scored a great point, and demonstrated that in addition to imparting a sound education, they give to their pupils a polish in manners and selfpossession that is too often sadly wanting in children.
The programme opened with a capital chorus “Away, Away,” which was met with hearty applause. A musical composition “Oapricanti” was very accurately executed on three pianos by Misses A, Skoglund, Alice Hannan, E, Kemple, L. Cottle, M. E. Noonau and J. O'Reilly, There were other three compositions, “En Route,” “Dresdena” and a “Muzurker,”. in which in addition to the above performers Misses M. O'Brien, I. Armstrong, C. and J. Mahoney, M. Harris, Lutz, M'Liskey, Arnett, M. E. M'Carthy, M. Peterson, A. Bowman, M. E. Noonan, and L. Cottle took part, all excellently rendered, while the “Polish Dance” solo on three pianos by Misses M'Donnell, Algie and Guthrie was much appreciated. It may be mentioned incidentally that most of these pupils had successfully negotiated the Trinity College examination, and were therefore capable of an intelligent interpretation of the composers ideas. The vocal efforts were meritorious, “Christmas” and “Away, Away” being rendered with taste and expression, while in solos Mbs Eileen Hannan, rather surprised the audience with her exceptionally good efforts. She had to submits several recalls. The doll duet, was charmingly rendered by Misses Yera Hannan and L. Copley.
A very pretty picture was presented in the “Japanese Fan,” wherin the following little maidens attired in Japanese costume sung with graceful action a tuneful composition. Misses May Kilgour, Theresa Mahoney, Muriel Swan, Louie Copley Mary Higgins, Yera Hannan, Masy Johnston, Dorie Lutz, Pearl Hood, Pebel Hood, Mary Mahoney, Rita Hannan, Lena Higgins, Mollie Clarke, Annie Bowman, Mary Ellen M'Oarthy, Lottie Lutz, and Gladys Hannam. . .. •
The “Ribbon Drill" was very gracefully gone through by Misses Florrie Shan* naban, Nellie Mahoney, Joan O’Eielly, Maggie O’Brien, Alice Hannan, Eily Hannan Mary Keating, Kate Kennedy, Molly Clarke, Maude Casey, Alice Doogan, and Mary Kennedy. The evolutions are difficult and movements graceful. An operatta “Rose and Rosette" .was very well portrayed. The composition is one of those peculiarly suitable to such an entertainment and was capably staged sung, and acted by the Misses Noonan, Mahoney, Hannan, Cottle, Hood and Master Hannan. At the conclusion Dean Oarew in thanking the audience for their attendance congratulated | the Sisters upon the great success they had attained that evening, and also during the year as was evidenoed by the recent examinations. The concert was a financial success and has excelled all previous entertainments of the past, and in the future' if it is surpassed it will be by a record, ,• of which any community in the Colonies would have good right to be justly proud of.
