New Stock Exchange. Sydney, Dee 17.
The Lieut-Governor bpened the handsome new Stock Exchange in Pitt Street. Congratulatory speeches were made by the Premier and others.

Barton has received a communication from the Imperial Government asking the assistance of the Commonwealth in preventing immigration to South Africa of dangerous and undesirab’e persons, by the appointment of an officer in each State to issue permits to those considered fit. Barton is taking steps to enforce the request. The Shipping Tariff. It is understood that the trouble with Lintpold has been arranged, the agents of the vessel giving a guarantee to pay duty on all goods used both in and between the ports after the custom seals are broken. Hot Weather. Brisbane, Dec 17. The weather is extremely hot. A number of stations registered from 114 to 125 in the shade. Heat in New South Wales. Sydney, December 17. A strong north-westerly, like a blast from a furnace, prevailed all day. The heat was prostrUing - 104 in the shade. There is a cool and southerly breeze in the city to-night. The heat wave is general in many of the country stations - 100 to 115 at Barcaldine and Brewarriua, at Tilbatt 117, and and at Goodooga. There is serious damage to the wheat crop, and the heat is causing it to shell. There are bush fires in some districts. A Nugget. A 220 z nugget was found by a prospec- I tor flt ‘Wellington.
