The Loan estimates include £399,000 for the repayment of 5% debentures falling due in July next; £75,008 for improvements to Sydney harbour, £IO,OOO for a consumptives home, £7,000 for an inebriates home, and £20,000 for a memorial to soldiers who fell in South Africa. The Premier explained that the proposal would take the shape of a hall where soldiers could meet. There would be an imposing vestibule with the names of the fallen inscribed on the walls. New South Wales Parliament. The discussion, during the long sitting on the estimates, was occasionally heated. One member declared there was not a man who should bo in the chair, but a policeman with|a revolver. Committed for Trial. Schofield was committed for trial for stealing a horse and bull, they being Hordern’s property at Retford Park. The ocher charges are proceeding. Scow Moana Sold. Received this day at 9 16 a.m. Sydney, This Day. The scow Moana which was engaged in the New Zealand timber trade was sold to the Pdce Company, Sydney. She will bo employed in the hard wood trade between Sydney and New Zealand. The King’s Coronation. Melbourne, This Day. The Federal Parliamentary Party arranging for a visit to London for the Coronation will probably number about thirty. Queensland Meat Company. Brisbane, December 16 An English syndicate have purchased the Central Queensland Meat Expert Company’s works at Lakes Creek including sixteen thousand acres of grazing freehold for £BO,OOO. Train on Fire. Adelaide, Dec 16.
Shortly after the express left Broken Hill for Adelaide, a fire supposed to have been caused by the explosion of gasolene, started in the van containing extra large consignments of luggage and mails. The speed was increased in order to reach the next station and obtain assistance. This fanned the flames, which spread rapidly. There was much excitement among the passengers. The guard stuck to his post and threw out the luggage till the fire was so fierce that he had to escape along the footboard. The van was gutted, and several bags of mails and a large quantity of luggage destroyed.
