THE CHEVIOT EARTHQUAKES.
+. (per press association.) Chbistchtjbch, December 9. A severe earth tremor was reported to hare occurred at 3 15 a.m. on Sunday. The Premier visited Cheviot to-day. He met the relief committee in the evening, when a report was presented stating that 60 applicants assessed their damage by the earthquake at £3,340. There were other applications, some of which the committee h>>d got to invest'gate, and in other cases it was thought that the applicants were in a position to bear the loss. The relief funds in Christchurch amounted to about £BOO, and would probably reach £I,OOO. Expert builders estimated the cost roughly of repairing the hcuses of those who needed the help at £755, and the chattels destroyed in those was worth about £1,500. The Premier said that after what the Colony had done in other cases he felt that if public subscriptions could be raised to £I,OOO the Government would take the responsibility of providing the other £1,200 required, I
