BRITISH SUBMARINE VESSELS.
The first of the five submarine boats ordered by the British Admiralty from Messrs Vickers, Sons, and Maxim was launched on tho 2nd ultimo from the Naval Construction Works at Barrow-in-Furness. This is tho first submarine vessel yet built for the British Navy. The other four are in a forward siate, and will be launched this year. They are of the Holland type, tho patent for which has been acquired by Messrs Vickers. The dimensions of the boats are; —Length, 63ft 4in, and beam, lift 9in, with a displacement (submerged' of 120 tons. The horse-power afloat is 160, and submerged 70. Tho boat can expel torpedoes either while stationary or while travelling at full speed above or below surface. The exterior of the hull is free from projections likely to become entangled by ropes or other obstacles when under water, while she is specially designed on lines to minimise resistance when cruising on the surface, where she will be propelled by a gasoline typo of main engine, capable of maintaining a maximum speed of about nine knots. Submerged, and electric motor will give a speed of seven knots for a four-hours’ run.
