WAVERLEY ON BOULDER BANK
No Damage—Officers Exonerated
Last Wednesday morning the steamer Waver’ey, while on her way from Wellington to Nelson, touched at Schnapper Point, on the Boulder Bank. A Magisterial enquiry was held into the circumstances on Friday at Nelson, the result being that the officers certificates were returned to them. Although the master was ordered to pay three guineas expenses the Court emphasised that no serious blame was attached to him. The second mate, who holds no “ticket,” was in charge of the deck when the steamer touched. Very little damage was done, and no water was made. Captain Viekcrman his been in charge of vessels for the past 17 years, and this is the first time one of his charges has touched land, excepting, of course, while crossing bars.
