The Supreme Court was occupied the greater part of the day hearing a charge against Patrick Campbell, aged 29 years, who pleaded " not gnilty " to the indictof having committed assault with intent on a young woman at Karori on August 13th. The jury returned a verdict of guilty and Mr Justice Edwards imposed a sentence of ten years with hard labour. The evidence showed the prisoner assailed his victim with great violence, from the effects of which she had not yet recovered. Prisoner has a bad record. In Hawkes Bay in 1894 he was sentenced to five years and flogged for rape, and has also been convioted for crimes of violence indecency. His Honor said he would not order him to bo flogged again, as he had shown himself to ba brutish in character.
