A Government telegram from Cheviot states that since Friday, sharp cannonading and dull oooming sounds have preceded and followed earthquakes.
At 2am to-day a sharp noise in the air preceded scores of light shakes. At 3 35 there was a very violent shock from north. It was followed by dull sound in the earth.
Christchubch, Dec 2.
At a meeting of the Cheviot Belief Committe it was reported that sixty applications for relief has been received. Applicants stated their losses amounted ta £3OOO. It was decided to employ a builder to help to assess the damage in each individual case, and report at a meeting next Saturday. The cases will then be dealt with on their merits. A severe shock was felt at Cheviot at 3 59, a m and reported to have been more severely felt at Btations north of Cheviot.
