CRICKET.

Sydney, November 23.
It was a magnificent day and the wicket was excellent. There was a tremendous concourse of spectators, at least over 30.000.
The Englishmen began inauspiciously, the first two wickets going for an additional run on the last innings total. Clarke was keeping a fine length. Hayward replaced M'Gahoy to get leg before. Quaife, despite his English average, failed to make much progress against Howell and Clarke. It was not till Jones partnered M'Larcn that anything like lively play ensued. The Notts Captain played with groat dash. The fielding was somewhat loose and without the finish which characterised the Englishmen. M'Laren played fine, steady cricket, not brilliant, but sound. After lunch both batsmen scored merrily. After compiling 45 Clarke tempted Jones out at one which scattered his stumps. Jessop received a treat ovation on going out, the crowd being anxious to witness his prowess. Jessop plays fast from the jump. The first stroke was for a couple, followed by a five and two fourers and then the end came. The North Sydney bowler sent a tempter, and Jessop went out at it mi-sed and retired. With the sixth wicket down for 160 Lilley joined his Captain, who made the first century of tbo tour, after being 4 hours 10 minutes at the wicket The partnership with the Warwickshire player was a serviceable one and carried the score to 233 before the separation came. Clarke was kept bowling almost continuously, the changes being worked at the other end. M'Lareu played all the bowling with equal freedom. Gunn followed and scored rapidly, giving the field a lively time. Howell stopped Gunn’s career with a fine ball. Braund had only joined when M ‘.Laren lifted Hopkins high to C Gregory in the outfield, who made a splendid catch. He batted 4 hours 10 minutes, and received an ovation.
