Dunedin, Tlrs Day.
The first of the. charges of betting totalisator odds against Peter Grant,_ oi Barnett and Grant, bookmakers, being the sequel of the recent raid by the police came on at the Police Court to-day. In addition to Mr Graham, S.M., four J.P.’s gut in an appearance and took seats on the bench. Two witnesses called declined to give evidence, which might incriminate them. Mr. Graham, S. M., thought that he had power to issue a certificate of indemnity, and the Crown Prosecutor produced a telegram from the Justice Department stating that if the witnesses gave full evidence they would not be proceeded against. The majority of bench overruled the Magistrate’s opinion, and the case was dismissed on the ground that the amount paid out was not the same as the tot.lisalor dividend. There are 58 other charges which were adjourned to the stla of December.
