Mr Barton laid on the table the correspondence relating to a protest from Japan against the Alien Restriction Bill, The Japanese Ambassador in London objected to the educational test as a means of discrimination. He requested that Japan be placed on the same footing as European races, Mr Chamberlain pointed out that in 1897 Japan asked that Australian restriction should follow the lines of the Natal Act. —— It is t this will be done in Jb* Federal Bill. It is not thought that the Imperial Government are in a position to suggest any modification.
