A FATAL FIRE
(per press association.)
Napxbb, Nov. 22,
A fire occurred near Te Auto about midnight last night, and was unfortunately attended with fatal results, three children being burned to death. The
house, a small one, which was owned and occupied by a half-caste named Eupene Erueti (Eeuben Edwards), who at the time of the occurrence was away from home shearing at Kereru, was burned to the ground. Edward’s wife, a Maori woman, and another native woman, who were sleeping in the house at the time just succeeded in escaping with the baby. The three children, however, a girl twelve years of age and another girl of four years and a boy of five years were burned to death, the remains being charred beyond recognition. Much sympathy is felt for the parents both amongst the natives and Europeans, Edwards being well known throughout the district.
