Breach of the Licensing Act
Dunedin, Nov 20.
At the Police Court to-day the licensee of the Gladstone Hotel was fined £5 and two guineas for failing to admit the police. A charge of permitting drunkenness on the premises was dismissed. A Lengthy Ministry. Cjisistchurcu, Nov 20.
At the Wesleyan Synod the Eev J. Orchard, after 41 years ministerial service applied for leave to retire from the full work of the ministry after next Conference. The Synod agreed to recommend the Conference to grant the request and also recorded its recognition of his exceptional! lengthy and valuable services to the church.
The Eev W. Lee; was elected Conference representative.
Breach of the Shipping Act,
At Lyttelton to-day Captain Wyllie was fined 5s and costs, for a breach of the Shipping Act by carrying a trimmer to sea without entering into a proper ugreement. It appeared the engineer engaged the man, without the knowledge of the caption, who as soon as ho knew of the matter reported it to the Marine Superintendent at Lyttelton. Under the circumstances only a nominal penalty was imposed. Breach of the Publication Act. Wellington, This Day.
At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, Henry Wright manager of the Commercial Agency, was fined the minimum sum of £3 and costs for publishing a paper without an imprint. New Zealander Seriously HI The Premier has received a cablegram from South Africa that 3790 Lance Corporal Stark is seriously ill of dysentry at Carignios. Supreme Court Sittings. Nelson, Nov 20. At the Supreme Court before the Chief Justice, May Gifford was admitted to six months probation for concealment of birth.
Walter William Jabez Hall got six months imprisonment with hard labor for the theft of Government monies at the Motueka Post Office totalling nearly £250. Both prisoners had pleaded guilty in the lower Court. Auckland, Nov 21. At the Supreme Court, a young Maori named Matui Tau was convicted for attempted rape on a Maori woman, and sentenced to four years and 25 lashes. Gored by a Bull. Auckland, Nov. 21. Dr Flemming, of Tauranga, was gored in the abdomen by a bull. The animal entered bis garden, when being swam ashore. The sufferer’s condition is serious. Mrs Flemming was also knocked down but is not seriously hurt. Arbitration Court Members. Wellington, This Day. Sam Brown and Robert Slater have been re-elected to the Arbitration Court as respesentatives of the employers and workers respectively. Suspected Leprosy. Wellington, This Day.
A case of suspected leprosy, that of a Chinaman at Paimerston South, has been reported to the Health Department.
