GOLD DREDGING.

Last week's wash up of the Hau Hau dredge is unofficially announced to have been 18oz.

Monday night and Tuesday morning supplied as good a sample of West Coast! weather as one could desire. As a con-; sequence the Teremakau River and the Greenstone Creek were in high flood. This will seriously affect the dredging returns from at least two of the dredges, the '"Creek" and the ''Three Mile." The Greenstone Junction is riding in perfect safety. On Monday afternoon the Greenstone Creek pontoons struck a submarged log and as a result sprung a leak. The man in charge on tha shift succeeded in stopping the main inflow by the aid of bags and none too soon,. as the dredge was filling rapidly. On the arrival of Mr Eobinson, the dredgemaster, a deck was rigged in the paddock and by the aid of ihs steam winche3 and wire rope and tackle the pontoons were raised sufficiently to bring the injured part above water level when it was found that a plank for about four feet had been stove in. The damage was soon rtpired, and in about 12 hours the dredge was at work once again. When it is remembered that the icjury to the vessel was about two feet under water level, it will be seen at once that it was solely due to the prompt and intelligent action of the master and crew that the vessel was saved from sinking. Much credit is due to them and they are to be complimented on their promptitude. A report reached town but not confirmed at the time of wrung that the boat belonging to the above dredge got swamped under the vessel during yesterday's flood.
