None too soon has the work of deviating tl e Cbristchurch road at Harris's been vr.di rUken. The river has swerved in on tbo road, and in flood time the bridge is in imminent danger of destruction. Only on Monday last a horse had to be lead acjoes, and the c&rfc pulled over after-

the bridge not being deemed safe enough to carry both. It is said that even in moderate floods the planking of the bridge is completely submerged. Tha work of deviating, the road is under the charge of Mr F. Carley, and the following were successful on Saturday out of 28 applications in drawing for sections under the co-operative system: E. Peters, J. Stark, E. Fortune, T. Candy, M. Roch-. ford, J. Harris, J. Dixon, M. Nicholas, H 7 Adamson, W. Nolan, G. Morgan, James MoGlone, John McGlone, W. Peters, and M. Joyce. The work consists of about a mile and a half of new roading and will require six moDths to complete. Eev J. E. Thompson delivered his lecture on the poet, Eobert Browning at the Young Men's Club last evening. _ It proved very interesting and instructive, and at the close an animated discussion resulted on various points that cropped up during the delivery of the lecture. At the close a hearty vote of thinks was accorded the lecturer.

Inspector Fetch of the Grey Education Board examined the Greenstone public school on Tuesday and is performing a similar duty at Wcstbroak school to-day.
