THE MINISTER OF LANDS.
The Wellington Post says:—"lt is currently reported in Southland that the Hon. Thos. Duncan will in the course of the next few weeks resign his office as Minister of Lands, and be succeeded by Mr M'Nab, the member for Mataura. The Premier may thiDk it worth while to make some announcement on the subject before the close of the session." I understand that Mr M'Nab knows nothing of the matter so far, It is pretty generally
recognised, however, that Mr Duncan is not equal to the work and responsibility of such an important department. In the event of his resignation Mr Hogg would also be a candidate for the portfolio, but he would hardly be in the running with a man of Mr M'Nab's ability, unless No'th Island interests were 10 be considered in reconstructing the Cabinet. Mr Hogg has, however, lost in popularity, even with the North Islander?, during the past two sessions, and members generally do not regard him as being the possessor of any great administrative ability. In the event of Mr Duncan's retirement, a seat would in all probability be found for him in the Legislative Council.
