THE ENGLISH CRICKETERS.

[PEH PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.]

Melbourne, November 15.

The Englishmen began the second match of the tour against Victoria. M’Laren decided not to play owing to a slight attack of rheumatism. Last night’s rain made the ground sodden, necessitating a postponement till 2 30. The weather for the remainder of the day was fine, ..... Worrall, who captained tho Victorians, winning the toss, gave tho visitors the first chance of testing their qualities. The pitch was wet. The wicket appeared to suit the Englishmen better than the fast Adelaide oval. Altogether the play was more interesting, and several displayed better form than at the opening match. Jessop, who has a most unorthodox style, made things lively, putting his runs together in half an hour. Quaife went in fourth and took no chances. His scoring was painfully slow. Jones, in the little time he stayed, kept the field moving. His score included a fiver off M‘Leod. The wicket was cut up a good deal.

Towards the close tho Victorians acquitted themselves well in the field. Englishmen, first innings—Jessop 26, Tyldesley 10, Hayward 12, Lilley 6, Garnett 17, Jones 18, M’Gahey 15, Braund 2, Barnes 19, Quaife (not out) 36, Blythe 1, sundries 4, Total, 166. Bowling analysis—Saunders 3 for 61, M’Leod 5 for 75, Armstrong 2 for 8, Laver 0 for 18.
