Sweetened Tobacco.

Mr T, R. Wicheoombe and Mr W. B. Russell, well-known tobacconists, were summoned before the Manchester City S.ipondiary for having sweetened tobacco in their possession unprotected by the customs label. Defendants stated that the higher duty required by law had been paid, but that the tobacco had been open for inspection by customers only. Mr Hawking of Somerset House, explained that the prosecution wished to bring the precise law before the dealers. Such tobacco must have the stamp intact. The Stipendiary imposed a fine of three times the value of the tobacco and a guinea for the anlysis in each case.
