Auckland, This Day.
In consequence of the outbreaks in the Philippines and general restlessness of the natives, it has been determined to drive every man without an occupation to the towns, where they can be under surveillance. Ten thousand additional troops will sail mostly Irom ’Frisco during the next thirty days, and 20,000 more will be sent to take the places of time expired men. The victory of the Columbia was decisive enough though the Americans would have been pleased to see another race with the hope of winning the final. Other than the time allowance the last race of October 4th throughout was close and exciting. The Shamrock passed the line a scant length ahead of tire Columbia and lost by 41 seconds on the handicap.
A thousand letters were sent to the prison for Czolgosz and many packages of fruit and flowers but none reached him. Many were from Christian societies, offering consolation, and others from cranks of all sorts.
Despatches from London state that the health of the King is the burning topic in social and insurance circles. Newspapers mention that Lloyds lias advanced the rate of premiums on the King’s life from 10 to 12 V and finally to 15. These dealings indicate that Insurance Coys are shutting down on policies on the King’s life of which over 2V million pounds was taken during the last month. Friends of the King continue to insist that he is only suffering from an aggravated case of smokers throat complicated by gout.
