The Herald dealing with New Zealand Government proposal to establish a direct lino of steemers to South Africa, states it is informed by a prominent New Zealander, identified with ovesea shipping tha, the response on the part shippers to the recent announcement that a large steamer intending loading direct for Africa proved very meagre and disappointing, and the outlook is such that the service for a profitable line is gloomy. The Antarctic Expedition. Melbourne, Nov 12. Barton informed a deputation of the Royal Geographical society seeking a Federal contribution towards sending a yearly relief ship to the Discovery in the Antarctic expedition, that he would consult the Cabinet but could give no hope of a contribution.
