OUR KUMARA LETTER.
(OUK OWN COEEE3PONDENT.) At a special meeting of the Westland County Council hold last Friday, our worthy townsman Mr T. 0. Byrne, was elected chairman of that body vice Mr Northcroft resigned. The present term has only a few weeks to run, but we feel sura that the Council’s choice is only to be taken as an indication that Mr Byrne will be chosen to preside at the Council table for the full term of twelve months when the annual election comes arcund. In the present chairman the Council has a man of ripe experience in local bodies, and one whoso tireless energy will not allow public interests to suffer. The Arahura riding is to bo congratulated on Mr Byrne’s election, as he has had to fight single handed owing to the protracted illness of his colleague, Mr P, Dungan, whose health is I regret to say, showing very little improvement. The Dillman’s childrens’ concert under the management of Miss Foster and Miss A. Preston, came off during last week, p-d was a pronounced success despite the fact that a number of Kumaraites were deterred from attending owing to the inclement weather. In one way the inclemency of the weather proved an advantage
as had it proved fine there was a strong probability of numbers being disappointed because of want of accomodation. The highest compliment that could be paid to all concerned was the almost unanimous request that the concert should be repeated at an early date. This unique success was due in a very great degree to tho whole-hearted manner in which Miss Foster and Miss Preston threw themselves into their Work of organisation.
Avery largo number of Kunlarai.tes availed themselves cf the holiday on Saturday to visit Greymouth and be present at the sports, sO the town presented duite a holiday aspect deserted; Nunibfirs again took advantage of the Special train en Sunday to pay their last respects to tho late Lieutenant Co'onel J. A. Bonar M.L.O. by attending the funeral at Hokitika.
On the 27th inst the annual concert in aid of St Patricks school is to come off at the Theatre Royal. In the past it has proved one of the great draws of the year. This, was due partly to the excellent object for which it was held and partly to tho superior programmes presented. The coming event will prove quiie equal to its predecessors as no effort is being spared to cater for tho taste of patrons.
