Narrow Escape from Serious Fire. Mangaweka, This Day.
A fire was discovered in a bedroom at the Langholm Hotel. It was occupied by the billiard marker, and before it could be controlled burned a hole through the ceiling. Luckily it was discovered in time or the whole town would have been in grave danger. The building was insured.
Numerical Strength in Various Denominations. Wellington, Nov. 7.
The returns prepared by the EegistrarGeneralshow that at last census the adherents of the principal religious of organisations in the colony numbered ns follows Church of England, 814 024 ; Presbyterians, 176,503 ; Roman Catholics 108,960 ; Wesleyan Methodists, 71,084 ; Baptists, 16,036 ; Primitive Methodists. 10,143 ; Salvation Army, 7999 ; Brethorn 7,494; Congregational, 6,699. Baptist Jubilee. Nelson, This Day. The Rev Mr Greenhough and several delegates to the New Zealand Baptist Jubilee Conference to be held next week, arrived this morning. Greenhough is to be welcomed to Nelson this evening at tfeo Wesleyan Church at which the Bishop and other local clergy will be present.
