THE SYDNEY SHOOTING CASE.
The truth of the proverb about marrying in haste and repenting at leisure is strikingly exemplified in the sensational shooting case reported from Sydney in last weak’s cable news. The man Pike and his wife were both fairly well known in certain circles at Auckland, and their marriage was as hasty and romantic as the sequel was sudden and tragic. Florence Gomes, who is only a little over twenty and is an orphan, was employed as waitress in a resturant, while Pike was living at a neighbouring hotel, and seemed to be in receipt of means from England, whore it is believed he is well connected. He became very popular, being hail-fel-low-well-met with everybody, and spending his money freely. He met Miss Gomes for the first time on Sunday, September 15tb, being introduced by the barmaid of the hotel, and on the following morning they were married at the Registry Office, and left the same day for Sydney.
