THE COMMONWEALTH TARIFF
A Protest from Fiji
(pIR PRESS ASSOCIATION)
Auckland This Day.
Fiji news states that a deputation of Commercial men waited on the actingassistant Colonial Secretary in the absence of tho Administrator, in reference to the duties imposed fcy the Federal Tariff on goods exported by Fiji. The Warden stated that it was evident that it would be impossible to send maize or fruit to Sydney at profit to growers. With regard to maize, Sydney was their only market as New Zealand did not require any. Possibly a reciprocal tariff might be mentioned, but ho pointed out if they forced Australia this way New Zealand would ask for similar concessions. Tho advisability of opening up fresh markets was urged. Sutherland in reply said there was doubt that the tariff was a seriour blow (o Fiji, and promised to send a formal protest.
Adelaide, This Day,
A large meeting at the Town Hall condemned the Federal- Tariff on the same lines as Eeid’a motion.
