SUSPECTED MURDER CASE.
(pub press association),
Christchurch, Oct 27.
A woman named Elizabeth Tritt, wife of Carl Tritt, laborer, died at Kaiapoi on Friday night under circumstances which caused the two doctors attending to refuse to give a certificate, and the police were communicated with and an " inquest opened on the body last night, before Dr. McArthur, coroner; and after several witnesses had been examined it was adjourned until Tuesday. Immediately after, Tritt was arrested on a charge of murder and taken before Dr M’Arthur and remanded till after the adjourned inquest. From evidence taken it appears Tritt is a widower with sons, eldest 13 years. Ho married his second wife, who was a Miss Mcßeth, of Kirwce, at Oxford, in January last. She was confined last month and confessed to her husband he was not the father of the child. Before Mrs Triti’s death she told tho neighbours that the bruises on her body were caused by her husband beating her with a heavy strap. Two doctors who made the post mortem, agree that the injuries which could have been inflicted in that way were tho cause of death. The post mortem revealed extensive internal injuries. Tritt was brought to Christchurcli to-day and lodged in gaol. Inspector Ellison has just left for Kaipoi to make further investigations.
