THE BOER WAR.

(pee pkess association—copyeight).

London, October 24, ' The newspapers publish tributes to Buller's career in a kindly and generous way. Several organs criticise the Government for weakly appointing General Buller despite the rule that only Commanders in time of peace command in war, and then seizing on his indiscretion to correct a mistake.

The Globe asks who U responsible for the appointment. The Yorkshire Post, a Unionist journal, and the Manchester Guardian, a pro-Boer, agree that to attack the appointment was virtually an attack on the Government, and that General Buller was superceded because he defended the Government's choice in his own outspoken way. The pro-Boer organs declare that Government, in order to placate the critics, yielded to clamor.

Great indignation is fait in Devonshire. The Mayor ot Exeter called a public meeting to express confidence in General Buller.

The Nationalists sympathise with him.

The Daily Independent classes him as the ablest General sent to South Africa. General Bullet was unmoved when he was informed of his supercession.

Ttegret and surprise are expressed at Aldershot, and much sympathy is felt in the country, though yesterday's verdict is unimpaired.

American comments are lenient to General Buller. The question of discipline does not appeal to Americans feeling, free utterance in America involving only reprimand. The dismissal is attributed to public opinion after the speech.
