INVERCARGILL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
(per press association.)
Invercargill, October 21
The Chamber of Commerce to-day in response to the Premier’s telegram re the Federal tariff passed a resolution strongly disapproving of the policy of reprisal as indignified and atvarianc9 with the spirit of fraternity which should exist between two important dependencies of the Empire. That with the object of opening fresh markets the Government be urged to take steps to foster trade with Africa by ejecting coal stores there and subsidising a line of steamers.
A motion suggesting export duty on dressed timber, and a substantial duty on undressed timber, the revenue to be applied towards reforesting was held over till nect meeting.
It was resolved to protest against the amendment of the Stamp Act, also against the practice of bleeding of sack grain on ship board in order to fill up corners ; the grain being after the discharge of the ship swept up and re-bag-ged with all dirt thus depreciating the shipment. The attention of the Minister of Agriculture was.to be drawn to this ’practice.
