DUNEDIN SHOOTING AFFRAY.

Dunkdin, October 21,

The preliminary hearing of the charge a T ainst Mary Pearce that she did attempt t) murder one Jane Kenwick by shooting her with a revolver was commenced at the Police Court to-day. The case for the prosecution was that on October 12fch Mrs Gray was visiting her daughter. Mrs Eenwick having occasion to pass, accuse Vs house, she mistook the door and knocked at Mrs Pearce’s door. Accused opened the doi r, and threw a billy of scalding water over Mrs Gray. Mrs Eenwick heard her mother call out and went to her assistance. She inquired from Mrs Pearce why she had treated Jjer mother in this way, and Mrs Pearce

replied by seizing Mrs Renwick by the hair, knocked her down, and assaulted her. Accused afterwards went to the mantlepiece, took down a revolver, and placing it close to Mrs Renwick s face fired a shot at her. The bullet entered her mouth and made a wound, m the cheek and emerged near the angle ot the right jaw. . Evidence to that effect was given by Mrs Ecnwick. The evidence of Lionel Pearce, 16 years of age, was to the effect, however, that Mrs Gray forced her way in, and that Mrs Renwick cm her arrival, caught Ii s mother by the hair, and that after ins mother let Mrs Renwick go, the latter caught his mother by the hair and throat and°forced her against the mantlepiece. She struck his mother a heavy blow, knocking her against-thc wall, He then heard a shot aad saw the revolver in his mother’s hand. The case was not concluded.
