ARRIVAL OF MAJOR-GENERAL HECTOR MACDONALD.

Invercargill, This Day. Major-General MacDonald arrived by the Westralia at daybreak and was welcomed by Sir J. G. Ward. About 50 set down to breakfast in the saloon of the steamer including representatives of the Dunedin and Southland Highland Societies and local bodies. The Pipe Band played the General to the railway station where immense crowds lustily cheered as the train left for Invercargill, On the journey to town the children of various schools, who have been given a holiday, lined up at the stations and cheered. At Invercargill Macdonald was met by the Mayor and a large assemblage, after which he was met by the Veterans’ Association and visited the local institutions. There will be a banquet to night.
