The McKenzie Memorial. Wellington, Oct. 21.

Subscriptions are coming in freely for the Sir John McKenzie memorial fund, and the executive officers expect to have a sufficient sum in hand by the end of the month to provide for the erection of a cairn on Mount Puketapu, and also a marble bust to ba placed ia the General Assembly Library.

The Timber Industry.

Dannevirkb, October 22.

At a meeting of sawmillers to-day it was decided to advise the Premier to place an export duty on baulk timber which the Commonwealth proposes to admit free, otherwise the white pine industry will be injured. Westport Port Charges. Westpcrt, Oct. 21. At the meeting of the Westport harbor board to-day. strong objection was taken to the insurance rates on freight sent to Westport, these rates being higher than those charged on freight shipped to Greymouth and Hokitika. Mr Griffiths, a member, said that in circulars from the Old Country the rates were also placed higher for goods supplied to Westport than to the other ports. Members failed to understand why the best port on the Coast should be treated in this fashion, and appointed Mr Colvin, M.H.R., to make enquiries at Wellington into this anomalous treatment.

Dunedin, October 21

C. W. Kerr, managing director of the Evening Star, died this morning of pleurisy.

The Licensing Bill. At a meeting of the council of churches it was resolved to protest against proposals in the Licensing Bill now before the House to empower the Colonial Secretary to grant licenses in respect to special places for the convenience of tourist traffic.
