THE PACIFIC CABLE.
[I'ER PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.] Received this day at 1 6 p m. Melbourne, This Day. The “Age ” dealing with Sir J. Ward’s denial of its statements in reference to the Pacific Cable says the statements were based on information from two sources, viz: New Zealand official correspondence, and private letters from Queensland.
It publishes extracts from official correspondence showing that Ward in a letter to Reeve’s mentioned that New Zealand will be prepared to take charge of the cable and find the necessary operating and electrical staff if desired. In another extract the letter from Ward to Audley Coote is proof that New Zealand was considering its construction of a State owned cable to Australia. The ‘Age’ concludes its defence by stating that either the official correspondence or Ward is incorrect in reference to the Pacific Cable.
