Wellington, October 10.

A Bill to amend the Public Health Act, has been introduced by Sir J. Ward, the Minister in charge of the Health Department.

It proposes to empower the Government by Order-in-Council to prohibit the importation of any material, which is likely to oonvey infectious diseases. Notice of infectious diseases which, under the original, is to bo given to the District Health Officer, is also to be sent forthwith to the local authority, and if the occupier of the house is himself sick the necessary permit must bo given by the person for the time being in charge of the house. Anyone failing to comply with this provision, is liable to a fine of £5.

The master of a ship from an infected port must hoist the quarantine signal on arriving within three miles of the pert which ho intends to call, and in default bo is liable to a penalty of £IOO. Passengers on a ship from an infected place must submit themselves for exam ination, and any person failing to comply promptly and satisfactorily with any direction or requirement of the examining officer, or obstructs or hinders him in the execution of his duties, is liable to a penalty of £SO.

No one but the port health officer or pilot must board a ship arriving from beyond the sea until she lias been granted pratique.
