William Coulson, caretaker of the Hauraki battery, was ’found drowned in a creek. It is believed that he was caught in the drive of logs that came down the creek at the time and disappeared.

Protest Against Farmers’ Union.

A meeting attended by over 100 settlers held at Cheviot on Saturday night The following resolutions were carried:— “That this meeting of Cheviot settlers wishes to record its protect against the uncalled for interference of the Canterbury section of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union with rebates given by the Government to Crown tenants. This exhibition of hostility towards a section of the farming community clearly points out that the Union is not being run in the interests of all farmers,” and “that this meeting of Cheviot settlers protests against the New Zealand Farmers’ Union interfering with the land for settlements policy of the Government.”
