The Premier is advised that the War Office approves of the position of the Commander of the Forces in New Zealand being offered to Major-General Babington, who has been Assistant AdjutGeneral of the Imperial Yeomany since 1900, and commanded the First Cavalary Brigade at the commencement of the present war. The Premier believes there is every likelihood of Babington accepting the appointment. Major-General Babington, recommended by the War Office as Commander of Forces of New Zealand, is at present on his way to England from South Africa. He was born in 1854, and has been Assistant-Adjutant-General of the Imperial Yeomanry since 1900. He entered the Army in 1873, and was made Colonel in 1896. He served in the Bechunaland Expedition in 1884-85, being mentioned in the despatches. He was Assistant-Adjutant-General in Punjaub in 1886-99, He was in command of the First Cavalry Brigade of the South African Field Force since the commencement of the war, and has been mentioned in despatches. Some of the New Zealand Forces have served at different times under General Babington, whose name was brought prominently before the public at the time of the Doornspruit affair.
