Crossing the line a minute ahead, ihe Shamrock maintained the advantage along the first and second legs of the triangle.
There was ideal Shamrock weather, a 12-knot breeze and fairly smooth sea at first, but choppy later on. Avoiding the efforts of Barr, Captain of the Columbia, to crowd, Sycamore, Caplain of the Shamrock, gained the win Iward berth and 94 seconds’ stilt, owing to Columbia being recalled for crossing t e line too soon. Tho first leg was a close reach, the a cond a broad reach, the third a dead b-.av to windward.
The Columbia proved her superiority in reaching and on the wind.
• he Shamrock rounded the first mark 72 seconds ahead.
On the second leg the Columbia gaintd 24 seconds.
The Shamrock stood off on the starbiard tack, allowing the Cclunbia the windward berth.
The Columbia exhibited superior pointing, and soon drew ahead. Sycamore failing to blanket, folljwed in the Columbia’s wake, the latter winning by 78 seconds, clear, or 215secoids including the time allowance and the difference in the start.
